"Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from a religious conviction"
-Blaise Pascal
I completely agree with this quote, because it's true. People, not just men though, seem to believe what they're doing is right as long as it goes with their religious views and beliefs.
This is related to the Odyssey since Odysseus is smart enough to not make the gods angry in order for him to have the most efficient route home. Therefore he follows his beliefs willingly in order for him to stay respectful to his gods as well as having benefits for himself. Eurylochus is another example since in book 12 he led the crew to slaughter Helios' sacred cattle thinking that as long as they built him a temple in his honor, they'd be fine.
