Does Suffering really lead to success?

Many say you must suffer in order to really succeed which i believe to a certain extend. The reason for this is because even today you see the ones who have struggled the most and have been through the worst of times usually are the ones that push them self in order to succeed and get away from that horrible lifestyle they have lived. An example is many athletes, most of them grew up in a very poor run down city and they push them self in order to be the best they can be and help provide there family's with a better lifestyle.

In the Book The Odyssey King Odysseus is suffering on the island of Troy for years ,but from that he has learned many things and required many strengths. Also if he had not been through what he has Odysseus would not be as much as a hero then he was in Ithaca since he was fighting for his city. But also if you suffered to much that could be a horrible thing since it will haunt you for the rest of your life and may even cause you to snap. That is why i believe suffering does help you succeed but only to a certain extend.

  1. I agree with the necessity of suffering in order to succeed. It is hard to think of a great success story where the protagonist didn't go through a series of tests of ability in order to get to where they got to.
Obviously, it's hard to think of a greater example of this idea than Odysseus since his nostos has such a large degree of challenges. His epic is extensive and his toils were great, the result of his persistence is greatness that dwarfs even his previous reputation for being a cunning soldier.
Therefore, to achieve greatness, one does indeed need to suffer.

  2. This applies to many aspects of life, but suffering can lead to more suffering as well. In life those who suffer sometimes don't make it. For example, hundreds of thousands of people dying of AIDS in Africa never see success and they never pull through even after suffering intensely. Suffering isn't always necessary in becoming successful though. For example, one who is a mathematician and loves school wouldn't see going to school and university and working late late hours before becoming a successful teacher or say NASA worker as suffering. They'd see it as enjoyment, and they'd be successful people without having to endure any pain. It's all about human perception though...
