This quote relates to all the great leaders of the ancient times, the reason for this is because they didn't only give there men greatness and their city civilization , they taught them how to do it for themselves and that is the greatest power. If they just got everything from the leader they wouldn't now how to do it for themselves and everyone would rely on the one person and if something was to go wrong and the person passed away that city would be done. That's why you must teach people your powers and the world around you will be a better place.

No Difference
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
Great Respect
Great Leaders
"I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion."- Alexander the Great
This quote is great and it tells you what Alexander the Great was like, This quote is saying it is better to have a great leader to guide you through battle and that it will help more to have a great leader instead of just having a mediocre one even if you do have a great army. This relates to him since he was a great leader and is one of the most famous ones to ever step foot on the earth. This makes you think would you really want a army of sheep over a army of lions just because of a great leader? Well if it wasn't for this quote people would easily take the lions but when you think about it The great one makes a good point.

The more The marrier
"The one man team is a complete and total myth."- Don Shula
This quote is telling people that in all great accomplishments there are many people in order to help succeed. Although there is always one person who gets the most credit, the reason i like this quote so much is that it shows even thou not every player has the same skills and there is a stand out but without all of them they wouldn't be as successful. A great example is Odysseus and Alexander the Great they were the leaders and guided their sides to greatness but no one else was really remembered even though without them they would not have been as successful.
Life at its fullest
"He who best enjoys each passing day is truly blest."- The Bacchae (pg. 224)
This is a great quote in the Bacchae, the reason for this is because it relates to everyone. Its basically saying if you enjoy your life and you are happy everyday that's what matters, not how much money you have and what not. This shows the main thing in life is to enjoy it because there is no point in stressing yourself out and worrying about everything because that defeats the purpose of life, Just relax and chill and you will be blest.

A true champion
“A champion is someone who does not settle for that day's practice, that day's competition, that day's performance. They are always striving to be better. They don't live in the past.”
-Briana Scurry
This relates to the odyssey very much, the reason for this is because Odysseus never settles for the days success but always strives in order to do better and concur a bigger task. An example of this is when he ends up on the island with Circa even though he is tempted to stay on the island with the beautiful goddess and can live in happiness his whole life , he knows he must do whats right and travel back to Ithaca to his real family to truly believe he is a true hero.
The dinner is served
"there is your dinner friend, the pork of the slaves.
our fat shoats are eaten by the suitors,
cold-heated men, who never spare a thought
for how they stand in the sight of Zeus. The gods
living in bliss are fond of no wrongdoing,
but honor discipline and right behaviour."
-Book 14; lines 97-103

A great leader
“I don't know any other way to lead but by example.”
-Don shula
This is a great quote from a former football player/coach, this relates to Odysseus because in this quote he talks about him being a leader and how he doesn't know any other way to be one unless he does the things he believes he has to be done in order to be the leader of his team. This is basically saying that you cant just tell your crew to do things , you must show them how and then they will follow your lead into becoming a better team.

temptation a humans greatest weakness?
temptation is an on going weakness for many people everyday and we must find ways in order to work around it . In the Odyssey , Odysseus has to overcome many temptations in order to finally return back to his city of Ithaca. But its not just Odysseus that has to over come his temptations but the whole crew, and a great example is when they want to see whats in Odysseus sack since they believe he is lying to them and getting treasure from the islands they have been at. Instead of avoid there temptation of opening the bag and finding out whats really in the sack that Odysseus received from the god of wind, they ripped it open and they caused them to release the winds and sent them back to were there journey first started.
Another great example of temptation would be when Odysseus reveals his name to Polyphemus. This was Odysseus's hunger for kleos and his temptation was to let people know who he really is , since he was happy he had just defeated the one eyed monster. He was caught in the heat of the moment and wasn't thinking of the consequences that could later come ,bringing Poseidon's wrath upon him and his men. This shows how hard it is to avoid temptation even the great hero Odysseus couldn't hold it back.
This shows that temptation is in fact a great weakness for a human and if you don't know how to hold back from them , it can really come back to bite you.

Cunning & brute strength is a deadly combination
In the odyssey book Odysseus shows us his knowledge frequently but the one time it really stood out was in the one eyed giants cave. Instead of just using his brute strength when the giant was sleeping to poke out his eye . He told the monster his so called name as "Nobody" and then got the giant drunk in order for him to pass out so they could poke his eye with the burning olive stake. This then leads to the giant screaming in pain/agony and when his Friends hear the screaming come to help, but they ask whats wrong and he replies" Nobody's Killing Me now by fraud and by force!" (book 9.line 445). This later on lead them to escape from the cave and continue there journey.
This shows that he new it would have to be much more than just stab the giants eye well sleeping and new that he would have to come up with a way in order for the giant to go into a heavy sleep therefore allowing them to set up for the jabbing of the olive stake in the eye. Also The name nobody was a huge factor because without it the giants Friends would have found Odysseus and his crew. Then the brute strength came in with the blinding of the giant. That's why cunning and brute strength is a deadly combination.

Does Suffering really lead to success?
Many say you must suffer in order to really succeed which i believe to a certain extend. The reason for this is because even today you see the ones who have struggled the most and have been through the worst of times usually are the ones that push them self in order to succeed and get away from that horrible lifestyle they have lived. An example is many athletes, most of them grew up in a very poor run down city and they push them self in order to be the best they can be and help provide there family's with a better lifestyle.
In the Book The Odyssey King Odysseus is suffering on the island of Troy for years ,but from that he has learned many things and required many strengths. Also if he had not been through what he has Odysseus would not be as much as a hero then he was in Ithaca since he was fighting for his city. But also if you suffered to much that could be a horrible thing since it will haunt you for the rest of your life and may even cause you to snap. That is why i believe suffering does help you succeed but only to a certain extend.

Wisdom,Courage and Knowledge...Kings greatest powers?
These three attributes are the gods/kings greatest powers. Its not all about strength which most people believe when they think of gods/kings. We find out why these are so important , In The Odyssey Book 10 , Odysseus shows us why. an example is When the One eyed giant asks him what his name is and he replies as "nobody" which would later on come into effect and save his life along with his crew members. But the greatest example of knowledge is when Odysseus gets the giant drunk in order to blind him and therefore leading to his escape . Therefore without these three attributes Wisdom,Courage and knowledge , Odysseus probably would of died an not have been remembered.

Do myths accomplish their purpose?
Myths do accomplish there purpose and much more . Myths teach people about there culture and way of life . Also it teaches everyone about why the world is like this and what people had to overcome in order for us to be here today. (example why we have lighting and thunder is because of Zeus.) This applies to everyone not just one culture and that's why I believe myths accomplish there purpose.( They didn't want to focus on only one culture but to all)
Are we slowly chipping away at civilization?
After reading the odysseys book one about how they are losing civilization at odyessus home it made me think. Are we as a society slowly chipping away at civilization i mean back then if you did a crime you would get sacrificed. But over the years we have been fighting these rules and actually winning forcing them to make the consequences less. Another example would be uniform years ago people would obey and not ask questions about why and how they must dress , but today at school people decide to choose against these rules and actually get away with it because its becoming a habit . If anyone in ancient Greece didn't fallow the rules they would probably be banished . That's why i believe we are chipping away at civilization.
Is hospitaltiy still a fundamental in todays society?
In ancient Greece hospitality was a must and if you didn't obey Zeus would destroy you. The reason for this is because Zeus believe being generous and a great hostest would help you be a better and more appreciated God/Person. An example of the is in the odyssey when Prince Telemaachus is sitting there obsessed with grief and day dreaming , but yet he See's someone at the gates and he goes to greet her " Greetings, stranger! Here in our house you ll find a royal welcome. Have supper first then tell us what you need." This shows us that even though he is in depression he still wants to please his guests in order for them to be happy.
In today's society you would rarely have something like that happen and a prime example would be, if you have a stranger walk up to your door you would probably not get it but you would NEVER let them in. This just shows ancient Greece was a lot more friendly and trusting because of it being a fundamental back then.

Is hospitality still a fundamental in todays society ?
Back in ancient Greece hospitality was a fundamental, the reason for this is because Zeus believed that this would make you a better god/person. In fact if you weren't a good hostest Zeus would destroy you. A great example is in the odyssey even though Prince Telemachus has a heart obsessed with grief and is day dreaming he See's someone standing at the door and goes to greet her " Greetings , stranger! here in our house you'll find a royal welcome . Have supper first , then tell us what you need." This shows us that even though he is in grief he tries to make the people around him comfortable .(1.81.125)
But in today society its not a must , a prime example would be if a strager came up to someones door today , they probably wouldnt even get it or if they did NEVER would they let them in. This just shows us in ancient Greece life was much more enjoyable and people would help eachother out , instead of today people only wanting to help themselves.

You're never to old to have a hero
" as you get older, it is harder to have heros , but its sort of necesasary."- Ernest Hemingway
Everyone always assumes that once you get more and more mature , you start to out grow heros and myths which i beleive that is false. I beleive if you have a hero at any age it will help you accomplish your goals and become a better person in society.Thats why i beleive its great to have a hero at any age and your never to old for one.

Can superior intelligence be a negative thing?
Daedalus was the smartest man on the island (Crete) and wanted to do something no other man had accomplished. Although being a great artist ,Daedalus envied his nephew's superior inventiveness and became obsessed with fear that his nephew would outshine him. Therefore leading him to pushing him off the top of Athena's temple on the Acropolis. When king Minos learned of an escape from prison, he blamed Daedalus. Being the architect and engineer he was , his goal was to create wings for himself in order to fly out of the prison he and his young son ,Icarus, got imprisoned in. This made Daedalus weary of Crete, and he wanted to return to his native land. Knowing Minos (The king of Crete) can prevent escape from land and the sea, he thougth the only way for his escape is through the air.
He was so determined to get him and his son Icarus out of prison , he persevered and finished his project which were wings in order to fly above the land and the water. Knowing it is to dangerous to go to close to the sun or else the glue can melt and cause the feathers to fall of the wing and would send him into the water were he would get swallowed by the sea. Not listening to his father Icarus went to close to the sun causing him to fall into the sea and drown.
This shows even he was so smart to create the wings and get him and his son to fly out of the prison. He caused his sons death because of his Intelligent idea even though it was too dangerous. This shows it doesn't matter how intelligent you are you cant always hide from danger, in fact you can cause things to be more dangerous then the really are. Example. instead of just staying in prison ,he decided to put his sons life in jeopardy in order to have the enjoyment/success of his invention.
