Twisted Truth

"When a society seeks to alter how the record is presented, well-proven facts notwithstanding, we learn how history can be distorted to political ends."

I agree with the the authors on this fact, but I disagree that well proven facts can not be twisted for political reasons. Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for example is clams that the Holocaust is a myth. Even when it is a well proven fact that the Holocaust did happen, and there is an amply supply of proof. This is a modern example of a political figure twisting history. I found an interview with President Ahmadinejad that was conducted on the topic. If you have a few minuets it can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykd-syzZ4ZY&feature=related.

  1. Victoria, it is as if you read only that line in the whole of the text. Only a line above your quote was this; "When a society suppresses portions of its past record, that society (or its leadership) tells us something about itself"(p.ix)

Look into Holocaust denial, or misconceptions, do your own research, should we not open these matters to debate? Though many of this Prime Minister's beliefs are terribly skewed, on this topic he may very well have a point. Think about what is gained on each side if history is written differently. Think about the political means and what parts of the past are responsible for the present.

Ahmadineiad questions why the Palestinians of today are suffering for the wrongs of the Nazis in the past. He is asking for fair and open debate, not the immediate taboo that currently hangs around clarification about the Holocaust. All these things align with what the author has said. The suppression of such debate by western society should be looked into, just as the author indicates.

In response to your video, I will post another, ingest all sides of the argument before you make up your mind.

Open, respectful debate should not be outlawed. Don't let this be then end of your research. Look into the truth yourself, it won't come finding you.
