In this particular story, I would say the gods are needed, since they are pretty much directly involved with the situation.
ReplyDeleteThe supernatural runs amuck.
The story advocates respect for them, and dependancy on them, in the form of sacrifice and such. If you do not praise the gods, they will be angry.
So you need to at least acknowledge them. "Godless" people weren't people at all, in this story.
